Mission: The Penn State Performing Magicians discusses aspects of magic and the performance of magic, shares secrets, techniques, and helps members advance in the performance of magic from the knowledge of one another. |
What we do
We perform magic at events for the University and for various groups, clubs, and organizations, around the State College Area. We also meet once a week to practice and discuss the art. A Typical Meeting We talk about and practice magic. The meetings are informal with a relaxed atmosphere because performing magic is fun. Members share their performances and request feedback from the rest of the group (a proving ground for new tricks). This tends to increase members’ skills much faster than if trying to learn independently. Gigs Throughout the year, many groups either hire or ask us to volunteer our time in performing magic for some special function they are hosting. This can range from nightclubs to charities. Attending these gigs offers a variety of experience with different audience demographics and situations. Tailgates Penn State invites us to perform at the President's Tailgates for home football games. These are the most regular and formal gigs we do. By now, guests at these tailgates have come to expect to see us walking around with a deck of cards in our hands. Thanks to this, new members are highly encouraged to attend because of the welcoming atmosphere at these events. Stage Shows Most of the gigs we do are of a walk-around magic (a nicer way of saying street magic) setting. However, we do try to put on a few stage shows throughout the year, mostly in the spring semester. Whereas the routines used in walk-around magic gigs are very much up to the individual magicians, stage shows are thought out in advance as a collaboration of the club. Membership Anyone with an interest in magic is encouraged to sign up. No experience is necessary. We do NOT have any form of dues, formal meetings, attendance records, distinctions between new and veteran members, or any other sort of nonsense. Think of it like a hobby, just show up when you can. |
